For NAIDOC Week, Year 9 Indigenous student Tremaine Baxter-Edwards was asked to attend Santa Maria's Assembly and present a speech. Here's what he had to say about the occasion.

In my speech, I discussed Recognition and Constitutional reform on Indigenous rights and what a Treaty is and why it’s important. In my talk, I wanted to prove a point and outline that even though we live in essentially one of the top 20 countries in the world, per capita, we still lack a lot. In my opinion, one of the big problems we face is the absence or understanding of what Constitutional reform is - which is just as important as a Treaty.

Being a guest speaker at Santa Maria College was the best thing ever because it allowed me as an Indigenous person of this Country to bring forth an issue affecting 3 per cent of the population (my people, the Aboriginal people), I really enjoyed my chat with the girls (and some of the guys) best experience ever.
