McDougall Farm Community Garden – Como, WA

Welcome to McDougall Farm Community Garden, a vibrant and inclusive green space nestled in the heart of Como. This flourishing community garden offers vital access to nature for urban residents, many of whom don’t have gardens of their own.

Stewardship by Aquinas College

In 2024, Aquinas College was officially appointed as the coordinator of McDougall Farm Community Garden, following years of active involvement with the garden and the local community. Since 2020, students and staff have participated in weekly after-school sessions, learning alongside experienced volunteers about sustainable gardening, biodiversity, and the importance of giving back to the land. Aquinas College now proudly leads the garden’s stewardship, fostering environmental awareness and community engagement, alongside the dedicated community volunteers.

A Community Built on Connection

The garden is a hub for intergenerational learning, where Aquinas students and older volunteers share stories, skills, gardening wisdom - and often some home-baked treats provided by our amazing volunteer Steph!

Volunteers are deeply committed—hand-watering the garden through Perth’s long, dry summers and tending to it during wet and windy winters to ensure its continued growth and vitality.

A Piece of Local History

At the heart of the garden are the heritage-listed horse stables, a remnant of the original McDougall Dairy Farm established in 1914 by Neil McDougall. This historic structure is a symbol of Como’s agricultural past and serves as a gathering point for volunteers, connecting the garden’s vibrant present with its rich local history.

Open and Inclusive

The garden is open 24/7 to the wider community. Visitors are welcome to take home herbs or seasonal produce—just please take only what you need. All produce is grown collectively, with no private plots, reflecting the garden’s spirit of shared purpose and collaboration.

Surplus harvests are donated to families at Curtin Primary School, helping extend the garden’s impact beyond its borders.
