Our annual dance night is designed to bring boys out of their comfort zone and analyse and target those "man-box" behaviours - a set of beliefs within and across society that place pressure on men to be a certain way.

Here's what the boys' had to say about the experience.

When we were told about this whole idea of dancing in front of 700+ people I was a little nervous at first but after a few rehearsals became more excited than anything. On the night, after all the rehearsals and everything, I was just excited to get it done and in hope that it looked alright. After the performance, there was a sense of accomplishment throughout everyone and we were all happy that all of our rehearsals each week had paid off. I learnt that it's more fun than anything getting up and dancing with your mates in front of heaps of people and I feel like we became closer as a group.

I am not the greatest dancer so I felt a little nervous and uneasy when I found out that we would be dancing in front of 700 people. I felt like the experience was a blast and was so worth it by the end of the night. I went from not wanting to participate in the activity, to wanting to do it again. The positive I took away from the dance challenge was that I should step out of my comfort zone more often and try new things as I may end up enjoying myself and a new experience. The dance challenge was definitely a highlight of year 9 and is an all in all great experience.

At the beginning of this task, I was really nervous and did not want to dance in front of hundreds of people. When I heard about the task earlier in the year, I was wishing I did not have to do it, and that I was going to really hate doing it. As we went on in the task though, I started to enjoy it more. The task wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought, and I had a really good time with my friends. When I got to the night of the performance, I was thinking the opposite of what I was thinking before the task. I didn’t want to get it over, I wanted it to last longer, because it was such good fun. When I got up on stage to dance, I wasn’t nervous, I had performed in front of a crowd many times before, instead, I was just excited and filled with energy. This task is a very good, fun thing to do at Aquinas. It really got us out of our comfort zone, and was a great way to help us grow. I think the task was a very good idea, and that it has had a positive impact on all the students who participated in the event.

At the beginning of the sessions, it would be an understatement to say that I was apprehensive. I was planning a a sick day on the calendar. I believed that it would be humiliating and embarrassing, and I didn’t want to try it or give it any thought. Skip forward to after the dance and I felt amazing. The crowd went crazy at the end and the feeling was indescribable. This feeling and hype were used to cheer on Ghostbusters and it was a spectacular night. I will take away the feeling of achievement that I felt after the dance and will know that we have done well. I will also say that I now feel more respect towards my peers for also giving their full effort and putting themselves out there.

At the beginning when Mr Dempsey said that we as a class were going to dance in front of a lot of people I was scared because I felt like I was going to be the one who stuffed it up and the one who made everyone else look bad but when it came to the night of the dance I was happy and having a lot of fun, I was smiling the whole time but overall I felt like it was worth it. When we first started dance practice I thought that I would just not put in effort at all and just not try but when I did try I had so much fun. I also thought that the dance was going to look bad but on the night it felt like it looked sick
