Michelle Cowan defied convention and aimed to be part of changing the face of AFL football in Australia when she was appointed as assistant coach at West Perth Football Club.

She was just 21 years of age when she eagerly took on her role as assistant coach before heading to South Fremantle FC as a midfield coach for three years.

Michelle was awarded the 2013 Football Woman of the Year award and continued to build on her AFL coaching career at the Melbourne Football Club before heading back to WA to coach the inaugural Fremantle Dockers women’s team.

Michelle’s success in the traditionally male-dominated AFL paves the way for future generations of women wanting to develop careers in one of Australia’s favourite sports.

Combining her two passions – motherhood and AFL coaching – Michelle’s amazing stories are a tribute to what anyone can achieve with enough guts, grit and determination to succeed.
